This briefing describes the use of a 'serious gaming' methodology to understand smallholder farmers’ decisions on agricultural intensification or farmland expansion in two sites in Zambia. The approach was used to explore with farmers, in a `safe space’, whether an increase in agricultural productivity and profitability would reduce or end farmland expansion. The results show that under certain conditions it will not do so.
