This briefing describes the use of a `serious gaming’ methodology to understand smallholder farmers decisions on agricultural intensification or farmland expansion in two sites in the Ethiopian highlands. The approach was used to explore with farmers, in a `safe space’, whether an increase in agricultural productivity and profitability would reduce or end farmland expansion. The results show that it will not do so in all cases.
