This contextual analysis has been carried out as part of the Social and Environmental Trade-offs in African Agriculture (Sentinel) project, a four-year research project that addresses the challenges of achieving Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 2 (zero hunger), SDG 10 (reduced inequalities), and SDG 15 (ecosystem conservation) in sub-Saharan Africa.

It serves as a useful reference document reviewing the country’s various land uses, past and current drivers and environmental impacts of agricultural development, the habitats most affected by agriculture expansion, and the socio-economic benefits and costs of agricultural development.
